JMI Online Research Security- as safe as it gets!

In the past few years, JMI has witnessed a trend among our clients towards increased testing of concepts and advertising online rather than using the more traditional CLT approach. In Japan, the cost difference between Internet research and face-to-face can be quite significant. Online is usually the clear winner - it saves you time and money!

However, to become an acceptable substitute for CLTs, online media testing faces two challenges: the ability to offer universally high quality exposure to all participating respondents and the key question of the security of the materials being tested.

For those wishing to conduct research in Japan, JMI has addressed both of these issues through its strategic partnership with Online Testing Exchange, OTX (for details, please see "http://home.otxresearch.com/main.htm").

JMI powered by OTX is the first company in Japan to provide online delivery of full-screen, full-motion, high-quality video, regardless of connection speed (above 33.6 kbps). This is achieved by downloading the media files to the respondent’s hard drive in the background while the initial parts of the survey are being completed.

Maximum security is then achieved via the use of a state-of-the-art digital rights management technology. This applies not only to text and audio, but also used for protecting video and graphics.

Video

JMI powered by OTX video security prevents respondents from being able to play the video file that they have downloaded outside of the survey-testing environment.

This solution takes advantage of Microsoft's Digital Rights Management software, but places a second proprietary security layer on top of it. The latter was developed by OTX.

This industry-strength solution has been proven safe against some of the world's best engineers. Indeed, OTX employed a security-consulting firm, which found the system to be virtually impregnable to hackers.

Concepts

For concepts, JMI powered by OTX utilizes a security solution that prevents use of the standard methods of saving images (such as right-clicking, using the browser toolbar to print, viewing the page's source to find the image path, etc.).

When required, security is further increased by transferring the concept board into a video file with a controlled duration of exposure (30 seconds, for example). By enclosing the concept inside a clip, it becomes protected by OTX’s video security system explained above.

These security measures allow JMI to evaluate our clients’ New Product development online, allowing them to screen more options for the same cost as a conventional off-line test and receive the results sooner. The security measures have gained the confidence in even the most competitive and high of industries much as blockbuster movie production and luxury automobiles.

JMI powered by OTX also offers clients the highest level of online functionality for testing:

- Online TV dial testing, with real time analysis playback
- Online 3D virtual pack testing
- Online 3D virtual magazine testing
- Online virtual store test

Despite its strategic importance, Japan has always been an expensive place to conduct market research. For this reason, the Japan leg has often been dropped (see the other article in this issue of Japan Market News) from global studies. At last, the rapid growth of online research looks to be providing a global companies with a viable solution, allowing them to gather the necessary data and analysis to make smart investment decisions in this, the world’s second largest market.
